Are you struggling to make any real money as an affiliate marketer?

Do your efforts only earn you a few sporadic crumbs… a sale here and there, leaving you feeling lost and desperate?

Or maybe you haven’t started yet and feel like a deer caught in headlights.

Do you, like I did for a long time feel overwhelmed by continually looking for ways to churn out content with nothing more than the hope of making some affiliate sales?

If so, I’ll share with you the "small change" you need to make in your approach to creating content that virtually guarantees you make sales for the product you’re promoting.

Once you understand the true job of an affiliate, you’ll be able to generate simple ideas for content that’ll make your readers eager to click through to the sales page ALREADY having made up their mind on buying it.

If you implement this you’ll find yourself joining the ranks of super affiliates in a hurry!

The Problem - Reason Why Most Affiliates Struggle To Earn Commissions

Before I tell you the right way, we need to talk briefly about why most affiliates create content that sucks!

You are likely guilty of this….I sure was!! And for years to boot! Depressing times I tell you 🙁

The big mistake is creating content that is product centric!

If you’re writing reviews of the product and keep harping on about how awesome the product or service is, the reader is far less enthusiastic to click through and buy it.

Your biggest blunder as an affiliate is to try and sell the product, only for the visitor to maybe click through, and be sold again on the product site!

As soon as the visitor gets a whiff of your “intentions", with you talking positively about the product, they instinctively know you’re pushing them to make some kind of a purchase.

They know they’re being sold to.

None of us like being sold to.

But ALL of us love to buy!

Same transaction, but the latter leaves the control in the mind of the visitor who having consumed your content now “wants to buy” the thing you’re recommending.

A further problem is most affiliates have an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) mindset when creating content.

What do I mean?

You might typically decide on a product to promote, and then do keyword research.

Choose a few product specific or ill thought out keywords and start creating content targeting them.

The content more often than not ends up being quite factual, boring and lacks any personality.

It fails to connect with the reader because you didn’t start from a “desirable place”.

Here’s an example:

You want to promote an email service provider like Aweber.

The way many or most affiliates will create content to promote it is by writing about email marketing statistics, what an autoresponder service is and the benefits…and then very quickly segue into dry facts about the Aweber service, and how it’s a great choice.

There are SO many of these articles on the interwebs and dominated by big authority sites.

You are unlikely to be able to compete or make many sales.

The Solution? - Smart Content Creation

Smart Content Creation.

Shift your mind away from the product you want to promote and brainstorm “ VERY desirable results your target audience would love in their life” instead.

If your content is focused on something they desire and gets them excited, merely placing a few “gentle” references to the product will do the trick.

When they view the product as a faster, cheaper, less stressful, time saving, risk free way to enjoy their desired result, they’ll buy in greater numbers.

The product should be nothing more than a great facilitator to getting what they actually desire.

You’re NOT in the business of selling the product as an affiliate.

You’re in the business of selling desirable results they want.

In many cases it’s better to NOT reveal all the reasons the product is great and leave the visitor curious about what’s on the “other side” of your affiliate link.

Let the sales page do its job of selling the visitor on why the product/service is a great choice.

You are not the seller!

You are the affiliate!

Your job is to “prime” the visitor. To increase the desire, increase their emotions, increase their curiosity etc to wanting the result.

Don’t waste your time and effort on promoting the product. Instead create content about something desirable.

If you do this, you’ll find your visitors are clicking through in droves, and you’re making some serious bank 🙂

Let’s move on with a few….

Examples Of Smart Content Creation

I hope you’ll better understand with a few examples. Implement this super affiliate way of creating content and you’ll see affiliate sales flooding in.

And yes, you can literally steal these examples and run with them 🙂

Example 1. Mirror Mirror on the Wall Who’s The Smoothest Of Them All

Product - A Wall/Tile Mounted Mirror

As an affiliate how would you try to make sales and earn commissions?

There are 2 options.

First if you're really just doing SEO you’ll try to rank for the keyword search terms like "wall mounted mirror", or "shower mirror" and related long tail keywords.

This is a very narrow approach. And boring!

Aside from the pain in butt of ranking your page and all the long term SEO patience required to get the rankings, you're limited to just people who are searching for it.

That implies the visitor already has a reason why he wants to buy one, and is searching for the best mirror for himself.

The affiliate's work is rather redundant.

You'll likely write yet another review like all the other affiliates.

And worse still… now Google only ranks actual Ecommerce sites as its traffic with explicit "buyer intent".

In a way it's the holy grail of traffic.

But it's very limited and fiercely competitive for rankings.

Second option.

Be a smart affiliate.

Create content that's not directly about the mirror but a "problem the mirror solves".

Be the context guy/gal 🙂

Here's a better way to sell these mirrors.

Create an article such as this -

"How To Enjoy The Smoothest Shave Without Any Razor Cuts, Nicks Or Burns"

Or

" The Ultimate Shaving Secret Revealed! Leave Your Face As Smooth As a Baby's Bottom"

LOL!! ok that's overboard 🙂 Just an off the cuff example.

No mention of mirrors at all.

Write an article that first talks about the problem.

Make them “re-live” the experience they very often encounter.

We usually go to the basin. Splash a bit of water on our face to make it wet.

We apply shaving foam or gel to create a softer surface and then shave.

Explain why, despite following those steps we're still left with razor cuts and burns.

It’s because the shaving foam only softens the surface, but fails to keep the skin constantly hydrated during the shave.

Expand on why a continuous flow of water while shaving does a far better job than stagnant shaving foam.

So shaving while in the shower, solves the lack of hydration problem, eliminating the problem of getting razor burns.

Oh but wait....the problem is we have bathroom mirrors only at the basin!

How can you shave while in the shower?

Worry not....here's a great shower mirror that solves the problem!

Example 2. Minimal Cooking Maximum Deliciousness

Product - The Best Selling Instapot

Here we have the ever popular Instapot.

I have one of these!

So what content/article would you create to promote this as an affiliate and make muchos dineros?

Are you going to create yet another boring article that describes all the great features and benefits of the cooker ?

And yet again create product centric content ?

Or will you instead think of various end results different target audiences would find very desirable?

Here are some great pieces of content that would make the reader WANT to buy the Instapot!

(By the way, for some quick affiliate commissions you don’t even need to build a website for this.)

You could literally just create these little fun pieces of content and put it on platforms like Medium….or create a simple Google Docs and share it in facebook groups, forums, in the comments section on relevant blogs etc.

Anyway, onwards.

Here are a few creative content ideas you could use and make affiliate sales for Instapot.

10 Mouthwatering Slow Cooker Recipes For Busy Moms With Kids

7 Delicious Slow Cook Recipes My Grandma Kept A Secret For 70 Years

15 Healthy Chicken and Veggie Meals You Can Cook With Only 10 Mins Of Prep Time

You get the idea 🙂

You’re creating content that is very desirable for a chosen target audience.

In each article you could target a different group of people e.g. Lazy singletons, Students on a budget, Busy moms etc.

Or you could create a collection based on type of cuisine, like Indian, healthy, low carb friendly, Thai etc.

The possibilities are endless!

And the element that ties it all together is the use of an excellent slow cooker!

Enter a few casual links to the Instapot….and a few words of how great it’s been to make these delicious meals.

Implement this simple plan, and watch the affiliate commissions roll in.

Ok, I’m spoiling you….but here’s another example.

Example 3 - Profiting From A Small Tribe

Product - Aweber (Email Service Provider)

Here we have the ever popular and widely used Aweber.

I’m sure you know already, it’s one of many tools businesses and marketers use to build a list of prospects or customers.

As an affiliate wanting to earn recurring commissions promoting Aweber, how would you go about it?

Will you once again make the mistake of focusing on the product?

Will you slave over writing articles, or create videos etc on how to improve their email marketing?

Or maybe offer comparison charts with Aweber’s competitors, pouring over the long list of features and benefits the tool provides?

What’s the problem with this approach?

The glaring problem is most of the audience you’re talking to have already signed up with the service.

They are marketers and businesses who are already upstream in the process.

Here’s the approach you can take instead to promote Aweber.

1. Create a short report about how restaurants can quadruple repeat customers or get reservations booked on the considerably slower weekdays….give a few different ideas.

Then recommend the email service you’re promoting as the tool they need to achieve their desirable end result.

2. Create a report targeting book authors who could profit from building a tribe of followers with the skills they already have, but never built their tribe.

Share a few ways in which they could fulfil desires they have which can be materialized by building a list.

And of course recommend Aweber as the tool to use to get the result they’d love.
